Tyro

The Massie family was instrumental in building and settling the small towns of Massies Mill and Tyro. A Massie family purchased a large area of land, first built a mill at Massies Mill and the Tyro. These mills escaped the ravages of the Civil War when women of the community pleaded with the Union Soldiers to spare them because the mills were their only source of bread.

William E. Massie built the water-powered mill at Tyro about 1822. His grandson operated the same mill for many years.

Tyro was popular for the distillery located at the end of Silver Creek where it ran into Tye River.
